Delta Air Lines flight diverts to Porto after smoke in cabin

A Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300, flying from Barcelona to Boston, was forced to make an emergency landing at Porto Airport in Portugal on Sunday after smoke was detected in the cabin.

The aircraft, carrying approximately 296 passengers and 13 crew members, diverted to Porto after approximately two and a half hours of flight. Emergency services, including over 60 firefighters, were deployed to the airport, and flight operations were temporarily suspended.

Reports on the number of people requiring medical assistance vary slightly, but authorities confirmed that several passengers were treated for smoke inhalation. Between 8 and 14 individuals received medical attention, with at least three to four people being transported to Hospital de São João in Porto. Those hospitalized were reported to be in stable condition with mild symptoms.

Delta Air Lines attributed the diversion to a reported mechanical issue. The exact cause of the smoke remains under investigation. The airline is working to rebook passengers for their continued travel to Boston.
