Delta State launches Bail Information Management System

The Delta State Government has launched the Bail Information Management System (BIMS) to reduce delays in bail administration and address congestion in correctional centers. The initiative began with a pilot phase involving the training of court registrars at the High Court Complex in Asaba.

BIMS is designed to automate previously manual processes by capturing and securely storing biometric records and fingerprints of defendants and their sureties. This system will facilitate better identification, verification, and tracking throughout the bail process. The technology will be deployed in both High Courts and Magistrates’ Courts.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Ekemejero Ohwovoriole stated that the system will provide judges with access to a defendant’s previous bail history, helping them determine if an individual has previously jumped bail. The program was organized in collaboration with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme, implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and funded by the European Union.
