Delta State partners with Supply Power to add 120MW to grid
The Delta State Government is implementing reforms to liberalize its power sector and attract private investment to expand electricity supply. A key component of this strategy is a partnership with Supply Power to add 120 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the national grid.
State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, stated that the initiative aims to reduce the state’s dependence on the national grid and support small and medium-sized businesses. The government plans to exploit the state’s abundant natural gas resources for power generation, specifically highlighting the Kwale Free Trade Zone within the state’s special economic zone as a primary area for investor interest.
Aniagwu noted that increasing local generation would alleviate pressure on the national grid, making more power available to other consumers. He cited an existing 8.5MW independent power plant in Asaba, which allows the state secretariat complex to operate independently, as a successful model for this approach.
