Turkey's DEM Party Delegation Meets Abdullah Öcalan on Imralı Island
A delegation from Turkey's DEM Party, comprising MPs Pervin Buldan, Mithat Sancar and lawyer Özgür Faik Erol, visited Imralı prison island on 2 August 2026 and held a three‑hour meeting with PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. The delegation said it will issue a written statement about the talks.
Öcalan told the delegation that the forthcoming “framework law” (çerçeve yasa) is a “key step that will open the way for the process,” adding that it will benefit the country’s 86 million citizens, contribute to peace and boost the economy. He quoted, “Bin kilometrelik yol bir adımla başlar.” The meeting is part of the “terror‑free Turkey” initiative, and the law is expected to be presented to the Turkish parliament in the coming week. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has also announced that the legal reform will be submitted to parliament soon.
