DEM Party to absorb municipal council members elected via CHP lists

The Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) has announced that municipal council members who were elected through the “City Consensus” strategy on the Republican People’s Party (CHP) lists during the March 31, 2024, local elections will now join the DEM Party.

The decision follows a request from the council members themselves, which was subsequently approved by the DEM Party Central Executive Board. The party stated that this move comes after evaluating the political landscape of the past two and a half years, during which several municipalities faced government interventions, including the appointment of trustees and the detention or arrest of mayors.

This shift in membership is expected to impact the balance of seats in municipal councils, particularly in major metropolitan areas such as Istanbul and Mersin. In Istanbul, the move has raised discussions regarding potential changes in the leadership structure of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB).
