DeMeco Ryans reclaims defensive play-calling for Houston Texans
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has announced he is reclaiming defensive play-calling duties from defensive coordinator Matt Burke. The decision comes as the Texans hold a 0-4 record for the 2026 season.
Ryans stated the move is intended to streamline communication among players and spark a change in performance. He noted that while Burke has done an outstanding job, the team has struggled defensively, particularly against the pass, ranking 26th in the NFL in yards allowed through the air.
This is the second consecutive season Ryans has adjusted coaching responsibilities to address early-season struggles. In 2025, Ryans had handed play-calling duties to Burke following an 0-3 start, a move that preceded a successful 12-5 finish and a top-ranked defense. The team now looks to improve its defensive standing ahead of their upcoming game against the Tennessee Titans.
