Dementia care challenges involve medication management and family strain

Managing dementia involves complex medical and familial challenges, ranging from medication management to caregiving logistics. Clinical guidelines suggest that for older patients, the burden of multiple medicines can lead to sedation, confusion, or cognitive impairment. Deprescribing—the process of tapering or stopping medications—is recommended when potential harms outweigh benefits. Specifically, clinicians are advised to consider deprescribing benzodiazepines due to risks of falls and dependence, and to evaluate the continued use of antipsychotics and cholinesterase inhibitors when benefits are no longer clear.

On a personal level, families navigating dementia often face significant emotional and logistical strain. Caregivers frequently struggle with the loss of independence experienced by the patient, as well as internal family conflicts regarding residential care and the division of caregiving responsibilities. These tensions can impact the mental health, employment, and relationships of those providing primary support.
