Dementia care gaps identified in UK healthcare system
Medical experts are highlighting significant gaps in the support provided to patients following a dementia diagnosis within the UK healthcare system. Paul Edwards, head of care at Dementia UK, noted that patients often feel their world has collapsed, yet the care they receive is frequently inadequate, sometimes consisting of nothing more than an informational leaflet.
Professor Paresh Malhotra, a neurologist at Imperial, observed that dementia care often fails to match the proactive management seen in conditions like heart disease or Parkinson's. He stated that patients are frequently discharged from care after a single diagnostic examination. Alzheimer's disease remains the most common form of dementia, accounting for approximately 70 percent of cases.
