Dementia in young parents and its impact on children

Early-onset dementia, occurring in individuals under the age of 65, can significantly impact families when parents are diagnosed while children are still in school or becoming adults. Common causes include Alzheimer's disease, circulatory disorders in the brain, and frontotemporal dementia. In cases of frontotemporal dementia, behavioral changes such as social withdrawal or tactlessness may appear before memory loss becomes evident.

Children and adolescents experiencing a parent's dementia may react through withdrawal, anger, or physical symptoms like headaches and stomachaches. Recognizing signs such as memory lapses, personality changes, or difficulty performing daily tasks like cooking and driving is essential for providing support.
