Dementia prevention research advances through new drugs and technology

Research and clinical trials are increasingly focusing on the early prevention and detection of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The PrevenTRON Phase-III international study, involving the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, is testing the experimental drug Trontinemab developed by Roche. This study targets 1,600 healthy adults aged 55 to 80 who show increased risk via the p-tau217 blood biomarker.

Nutritional and cognitive interventions are also showing promise. A King's College London study found that daily intake of prebiotics and proteins improved cognitive test results in older adults. Additionally, research into neuroprotective proteins suggests that cognitive training can have measurable molecular effects, particularly in individuals carrying the APOE-ε4 risk gene.

Technological advancements are being tested to support daily life and early identification. In Gotha, Germany, a senior apartment was equipped with 30 sensors to monitor behavioral patterns through household appliances. Furthermore, researchers are developing AI-based speech analysis tools to detect cognitive decline by identifying linguistic markers that may indicate brain disease.
