Lifestyle and biological research offer new insights into aging and dementia prevention
Recent scientific research highlights several pathways to influence biological aging and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like dementia. Studies published in journals such as Science and JAMA Neurology suggest that lifestyle interventions can significantly impact cognitive health.
Key findings indicate that metabolism remains relatively stable between the ages of 20 and 60, only showing a significant decline after age 60. Furthermore, researchers have identified the EP2 receptor as a potential ‘aging switch’ in immune cells; blocking this receptor in mice has shown to restore youthful metabolic levels and improve memory and heart function.
To mitigate dementia risk, experts emphasize five critical habits: avoiding smoking, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy diet, managing blood pressure, and controlling diabetes. While dietary supplements show inconsistent results in influencing epigenetic aging markers, proven habits like a Mediterranean or Nordic-style diet—rich in vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats—and regular exercise are strongly linked to better cognitive outcomes and delayed disease onset.
