Dementia risk rises with social isolation and excess sleep among seniors

Social isolation is identified as a major public‑health problem, affecting roughly one in four older adults and increasing mortality risk by about 30%. Isolated seniors have around 60% higher odds of depressive symptoms, greater chances of institutionalisation, and a faster decline in memory, executive function and processing speed, all of which raise the likelihood of dementia.

A separate study links sleeping more than eight hours per night to a 28% higher risk of developing dementia. While excess sleep is not a direct cause, it may signal underlying health issues such as neurodegeneration, depression, sleep apnea and heart disease. Experts stress that optimal sleep duration of seven to eight hours, combined with regular physical activity and balanced nutrition, is essential for brain health in older adults.
