Demi Moore nearly lost ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ role to Madonna
Demi Moore nearly lost her role as Jules Van Patten in the 1985 film ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ due to substance abuse issues. According to film co-writer Carl Kurlander, speaking on the podcast ‘Reality Life with Kate Casey’, Moore arrived at a costume fitting while intoxicated and under the influence of drugs.
Director Joel Schumacher and producer Lauren Shuler Donner reportedly confronted the then-22-year-old actress, giving her a ten-day ultimatum to get clean to remain in the production. Schumacher had reportedly considered replacing Moore with Madonna, whom he predicted would become ‘the biggest star in the world’ after meeting her.
Moore ultimately secured the role by attending AA meetings and working with a sober companion throughout the filming process. She has since spoken openly about her past struggles with addiction and the support she received during that period of her career.
