Demirci begins harvest of 138-year-old Figani Efendi plums

The harvest of the Figani Efendi plum has begun in the Demirci district of Manisa, Turkey. This specific variety, which has a 138-year history dating back to 1886, is grown using natural methods without the use of agricultural pesticides.

Approximately 12,000 trees in the region produce an average of 200 tons of fruit annually. The harvest, which started in late August and continues through the end of September, follows a two-stage process: first, the fresh green plums are collected for sale, and later, the remaining fruit is washed and sun-dried to be sold as a snack.

The Figani Efendi plum was granted a geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2024. Local producers note that the unique aroma and quality of the fruit are tied to the specific climate and soil of the Demirci region, making it difficult to replicate the same yield and quality in other locations. The product is distributed fresh or dried to areas including Ankara, Salihli, and Manisa.
