Demis Volpi addresses departure from Hamburg Ballet
Demis Volpi, the former director of the Hamburg Ballet, has spoken publicly for the first time regarding the circumstances surrounding his departure from the institution. Volpi, who took over the leadership from John Neumeier, saw his contract terminated prematurely after serving less than a year.
In an interview with the weekly newspaper ‘Die Zeit’, Volpi addressed the intense public criticism he faced. He stated that he felt portrayed as a ‘monster’ with two faces—appearing friendly on the outside while allegedly possessing a ‘sadistic desire to humiliate others.’ He noted that the discrepancy between the public narrative and his own experience caused him to doubt himself.
Prior to his dismissal, dancers had sent a letter to Culture Senator Carsten Brosda alleging a poor working environment and a lack of competence. Volpi, who previously served as ballet director at Ballet am Rhein, plans to return to the Stuttgart Ballet next spring with a new production.
