Democracy as a practical tool for daily life and education

Democracy is being framed as a practical, everyday practice that extends beyond elections and formal decision-making processes. Strengthening democratic values involves increasing participation, influence, and equality in daily life.

In community work, professionals can foster democracy by sharing agency and creating space for individuals to act as active participants rather than mere service recipients. This approach emphasizes that community members should have the opportunity to contribute ideas and take responsibility for their shared environments.

For children, democracy education focuses on being heard, agreeing on common rules, and understanding the importance of diverse opinions. By involving children in small-scale decision-making—such as choosing weekend activities—they learn to express opinions, practice responsible decision-making, and respect majority outcomes while acknowledging differing viewpoints.
