Democracy education initiatives proposed in Austria and Germany

Educational initiatives in Austria and Germany are focusing on strengthening democracy education across various age groups.

In Austria, researchers from the Pädagogische Hochschule Niederösterreich have proposed a ‘Five-Step Model’ for a future curriculum. This model aims to integrate democracy education not just as a specific subject, but as a cross-curricular responsibility involving the development of specific competencies and attitudes. The proposal utilizes the ‘Betzavta-Konzept’ to frame these educational goals.

In Germany, a practical training seminar titled ‘Living Participation – Learning Democracy’ is being organized in Goslar by the AWO-Kreisverband Region Harz e. V. The program is designed for pedagogical professionals working in nurseries, kindergartens, and after-school care. The goal is to support educators in implementing age-appropriate participation and co-determination as lived components of daily pedagogical practice.
