Maranhão candidate takes office as delegate following court ruling

Ariana Sampaio Sousa, a candidate who ranked 2,018th in the 2017 Maranhão Civil Police public exam, has taken office as a police delegate following a judicial decision. Although she passed the objective phase with 60 out of 100 correct answers, she was originally disqualified for not advancing to subsequent stages, such as the discursive exam, physical tests, and psychological evaluations.

Her defense argued that recent state legislation allowed for the flexibility of the 'barrier clause' to include more candidates in the professional training course. Following a ruling by the 1st Public Finance Court of São Luís, she was appointed and has since completed the training course.

The Maranhão State Attorney General's Office (PGE-MA) is currently appealing the decision to the Maranhão Court of Justice (TJ-MA). The state argues that the legislation does not apply to candidates who failed to complete all phases of the first stage and warns that upholding the decision could create a multiplier effect, encouraging other disqualified candidates to seek similar judicial appointments.
