Democratic AGs Plan Lawsuits Against Trump Before 2024 Election

In April 2024, nearly two dozen Democratic state attorneys general signed a confidential document dubbed the “Project for Federal Accountability” to coordinate litigation against President Donald Trump well before his 2024 reelection. The plan was drafted about three months before President Joe Biden exited the race and Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee, and roughly seven months before Trump secured a 2.3‑million‑vote victory.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who has taken part in 82 lawsuits, said the actions are “apolitical,” noting the lawsuits have cost California taxpayers $19 million and will continue as needed. Other participating AGs include Colorado’s Phil Weiser (at least 75 suits), Washington State’s AG (70 suits), and Arizona’s Kris Mayes (46 suits). Former Utah AG Mark Shurtleff called the early planning “not normal.” To date, 11 cases have been decided in favor of the plaintiffs and four dismissed in favor of the federal government.
