Democratic Alliance declares R104 million in donations ahead of elections

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has released its first quarter report on political party donations for the 2026/27 financial year, covering the period from 1 April to 30 June 2026. The Democratic Alliance (DA) declared a total of R104,034,185.25 in donations, consisting of R98.75 million in monetary contributions and R5.28 million in in-kind support. This amount represents approximately 89% of all compliant funding declared by reporting parties during this quarter.

Major contributors to the DA include Fynbos Ekwiteit and Fynbos Kapitaal, which provided a combined R55 million. These entities have been linked to Capitec founder Michiel le Roux. Other significant donors include gaming mogul Martin Moshal, who contributed R5 million, and members of the Oppenheimer family, specifically Rebecca Diamond and Jessica Slack-Jell, who each contributed R5 million.

These fundraising efforts come ahead of the local government elections scheduled for 4 November 2026. The reporting follows a revised disclosure framework that increased the annual upper limit for donations to R30 million and the declaration threshold to R200,000.
