Democratic Alliance campaigns for gains in South African local elections

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is intensifying its campaign efforts ahead of the upcoming local government elections, focusing on key municipalities such as Ekurhuleni, KwaZulu-Natal, and Makana. In Ekurhuleni, the party is targeting an outright majority to govern alone, with candidates pledging to stabilize municipal finances, combat corruption, and improve service delivery following reports of significant irregular expenditure in the metro.

In KwaZulu-Natal, DA leadership expressed confidence in securing new municipalities, citing public dissatisfaction with current service delivery. The party is specifically encouraging young voters to participate to address high unemployment rates. Meanwhile, in Makana, the DA faces competition from smaller, locally established political movements that have previously outperformed the party in regional polls.

Throughout its campaign, the DA has emphasized its record of governance and has called for increased capacity within the South African Police Service (SAPS) to improve public safety and the conviction rates for crimes against women.
