Democratic Candidate Kirill Basin Arrested After Threatening Beachgoers in Hawaii

Kirill Basin, a 40‑year‑old Democratic candidate for Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, was arrested on August 4, 2026 after a violent confrontation at Keawakapu Beach in South Kihei, Maui. Police say the incident began when a 61‑year‑old man asked Basin to lower the volume of his music. Basin allegedly threatened the man, claimed he had a firearm, and warned he would shoot the man's wife. A bystander intervened, leading to a physical altercation in which Basin was knocked out by a single punch. During the scuffle Basin is reported to have drawn a knife, which he later tossed into the ocean; officers recovered the weapon. He was charged with two counts of first‑degree terroristic threatening and held on a $1 million bail.

The beach incident is not Basin’s first run‑in with law enforcement this year. In May he was arrested after brandishing a firearm inside a Maui County building and confronting county employees. He also faces multiple temporary restraining orders, including one filed by Maui County Council member Thomas Cook, who said Basin had previously disrupted a council meeting. Basin is running against incumbent U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda. The Maui Police Department emphasized the seriousness of the threats and the swift response that led to Basin’s custody.
