Democratic candidates shift focus away from climate change
Democratic candidates are increasingly de-emphasizing climate change in their midterm messaging, a shift being described by some as ‘climate hushing.’ This represents a reversal from the 2020 election cycle, when environmental proposals like the Green New Deal were central to the party’s platform.
The retreat follows years of an aggressive environmental agenda under the Biden administration. Analysts suggest the shift is driven by voter concerns regarding affordability and the cost of living, which currently outrank climate change in priority according to Pew Research Center data.
The Searchlight Institute, a Democratic think tank, has recommended that candidates stop discussing climate change explicitly because it is not viewed as a top priority by voters. Additionally, progressive groups like the Sunrise Movement have expanded their focus to include issues such as immigration enforcement.
