Democratic Coalition pushes for new Danube flood‑control dam in Hungary
The Democratic Coalition (DK) has launched a signature‑collection campaign to fund the construction of a flood‑retention dam on the Hungarian stretch of the Danube. Party leader Varju László said the initiative aims to revive a comprehensive Water Management Fund that would finance new reservoirs, strengthen water‑retention capacity, modernise irrigation, drinking‑water and sewage networks, and improve the status of water‑management professionals.
Varju emphasized that DK has advocated for these measures for years, countering claims that the party has only recently addressed drought and water‑storage issues. He referenced the earlier Vasárhelyi plan, the last major reservoir programme, and urged that concrete steps be taken now to protect agriculture and the environment during dry periods.
