Democratic medical professionals seek congressional seats in 2026 midterms
A shift in party dynamics is expected in the US Congress as medical professionals prepare for the 2026 midterm elections. While Republicans currently hold the majority of physician seats in Congress, including all four Senate physicians, several high-profile Republicans face uncertain futures, such as Senator Roger Marshall, while Senator Bill Cassidy is stepping down.
At least five Democratic newcomers with medical degrees and 10 Democratic nurses are seeking seats in the 120th Congress. Healthcare policy remains a central campaign theme, though candidates hold varying views. For example, South Carolina candidate Andrews has described “Medicare for All” as an “outdated, non-pragmatic policy,” whereas candidate El-Sayed is a strong proponent of the universal healthcare proposal.
Other candidates, such as California Representative Ami Bera, emphasize the importance of bringing clinical experience to legislative discussions to focus on patient care rather than just reimbursement costs.
