Democratic National Committee 2028 presidential primaries South Carolina primary calendar election reform

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has approved a new primary calendar for the 2028 presidential nominating cycle, significantly reshuffling the early stages of the race. In a major departure from tradition, Iowa has been removed from the early primary lineup.

South Carolina will now lead the nominating process with a primary scheduled for January 22, 2028, followed by Nevada on February 1. The subsequent early contests will take place in New Hampshire (February 8), New Mexico (February 15), Michigan (February 22), and Virginia (February 29).

DNC Chair Ken Martin stated that the new schedule is designed to be more representative of the party’s diverse electorate, specifically prioritizing states with large Black, Latino, and organized labor constituencies. The move aims to ensure candidates earn support across a broader range of demographics and regions early in the process. To ensure compliance, the DNC has also approved tougher penalties for states that fail to adhere to the official calendar.
