The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee could hold a preliminary vote as early as Friday on the order of states for the 2028 Democratic presidential primaries. The decision would not be final until the full DNC votes on it at its August meeting.

Committee members have heard presentations from about a dozen states vying to lead the calendar, including Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. After the 2020 Iowa caucus controversy, the party has favored more diverse early‑state contests. President Joe Biden has backed South Carolina to open the primary schedule again, citing its larger Black and Hispanic populations. South Carolina Democratic leaders are lobbying to restore the state’s first‑in‑the‑nation status and have secured support from party chairs in five Southern states.
