Cyprus political parties adjust strategies for 2028 presidential elections

Political parties in Cyprus are adjusting their timelines and strategies ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. Within DIKO, party officials and associates are pressuring leader Nikolas Papadopoulos to consider a presidential candidacy. This move is viewed by some as a way for the party to establish greater autonomy and reduce its perceived dependence on the current administration.

Meanwhile, DISY has announced an extension to its internal election processes for selecting its presidential candidate. The Political Bureau decided that candidacy submissions will now take place on October 26, with an Extraordinary Pan-Cyprian Electoral Assembly scheduled for November 28. DISY President Anita Demetriou proposed the extension as a gesture of unity amidst internal tensions, noting that the process could potentially extend into December or January.
