Democratic Party considers special counsel bill for fabricated prosecution probe

The Democratic Party of Korea is considering pushing the ‘Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecutions’ through the National Assembly plenary session as early as the 1st of next month. The proposed legislation aims to investigate allegations of manipulated investigations and prosecutions by the current administration's prosecution service, specifically focusing on cases such as the Daejang-dong incident and the Ssangbangwool North Korea remittance case.

The move follows a recent press conference where the President acknowledged the need for the special counsel but requested the removal of provisions regarding the ‘withdrawal of public prosecution’ to mitigate controversy. While the Democratic Party has previously delayed the bill due to public opinion, they are now reviewing its passage before upcoming audit and budget sessions.

The People Power Party has signaled strong opposition, preparing to utilize filibusters to block the bill's progress. Party leadership has already instructed members to clear their schedules to coordinate a response to the potential legislative push.
