Democratic Party contests potential Ministry of Health appointment
The Democratic Party (PD) has raised objections regarding the potential appointment of Carlo Monti as the Director General of Emergencies for the Italian Ministry of Health. Francesco Boccia, the PD Senate group leader, has called on Health Minister Orazio Schillaci for immediate clarification on the matter.
Critics point out that Monti is a dentist who is no longer registered with his professional order, having removed himself from the registry in February 2022 during the period of mandatory vaccinations for healthcare workers. Boccia argued that the role, which involves managing infectious diseases and public health prevention, requires specialized scientific and sanitary expertise. He stated that if the appointment is confirmed, it would “exceed every limit of institutional decency.”
The selection process is currently ongoing; while the initial call for candidates has concluded, a commission has yet to be established to make the final decision.
