Democratic Party faces debate over ‘Woke 1.0’ political legacy

Debate continues within the Democratic Party regarding the legacy of previous social justice rhetoric, often referred to as ‘Woke 1.0’. Some political commentators suggest that Democrats are facing a ‘vibe shift’ where past extreme statements are being used by opposition researchers to label candidates as extremists.

During a PBS News Hour segment, Boston Globe columnist Kimberly Atkins Stohr defended the principles of the previous era. Stohr argued that the current political climate reflects the warnings issued during that time, citing the decimation of the federal workforce, the vilification of LGBTQ+ individuals by Republicans, and the elimination of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs as evidence of those concerns being realized.
