Democratic Party for the People holds leadership election

The Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) is currently undergoing a leadership election between incumbent Yuichiro Tamaki and challenger Mikihiko Hashimoto, with voting scheduled for September 6.

Reports have surfaced regarding internal friction during the campaign. Allegations suggest that Tamaki made aggressive phone calls to supporters of Hashimoto, reportedly criticizing Hashimoto’s status as a proportional representation candidate. During a joint press conference, Tamaki addressed economic policies, expressing opposition to consumption tax cuts limited only to food items, arguing such measures could harm the restaurant industry and agriculture while complicating tax administration.

In a separate campaign activity, both candidates visited Miyako City in Iwate Prefecture on August 26 to inspect disaster recovery sites from the 2011 earthquake. They visited the Taro Tourism Hotel and the Keri River sluice gate construction site to discuss reconstruction progress and the importance of disaster prevention education.
