Italian Democratic Party debates leadership and primary rules
Internal debates are intensifying within the Italian center-left regarding the leadership of the coalition and the role of primary elections. Igor Taruffi, the Democratic Party (PD) Organization chief, has moved to solidify Elly Schlein’s position as the party’s candidate for Prime Minister. Taruffi argues that the party statutes clearly designate the Secretary as the electoral leader, effectively blocking alternative candidacies.
However, the party’s reformist wing is pushing for more competition, specifically eyeing Giorgio Gori as a potential candidate. These reformers suggest a two-round voting mechanism to prevent internal fragmentation and to avoid handing an advantage to Giuseppe Conte, the leader of the Five Star Movement.
Adding to the complexity, Matteo Renzi of Italia Viva has stated that while he does not view Conte as his political model, he would support whoever wins the primaries. Renzi emphasized the need for a long-term political program focused on education, healthcare, and security to ensure the center-left can effectively compete in future elections.
