Albania: Protests in Tirana escalate amid calls for dialogue

Tensions in Albania have escalated following a series of protests in Tirana, marked by clashes between demonstrators and police. Recent incidents include an attack on the Socialist Party headquarters and a fire at a guard booth of the Vatican diplomatic mission.

International and domestic entities have issued urgent calls for calm. The United Nations and the Albanian Bar Association have emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and the protection of fundamental rights, such as freedom of the press and peaceful assembly. The US Embassy noted that violence and property destruction do not constitute civic engagement, while US Congressman Joe Wilson urged the government to refrain from violence against protesters.

Political leaders remain divided. Socialist Party officials have accused the opposition of orchestrating violent attacks, while the Democratic Party has denounced the alleged physical abuse and intimidation of pedagogue Ilirjana Kuçana during police detention. Religious leaders, including the Metropolitan Archbishop of Tirana-Durrës, have expressed concern over deep social dissatisfaction and warned that the current instability risks repeating the country's difficult historical wounds.
