Democratic Party of Korea launches animal welfare task force amid leadership challenges

Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok is facing internal challenges one month into his term, including personnel disputes and declining approval ratings for the administration. Amidst controversies regarding the withdrawal of nominations for key positions, Kim has emphasized the need to respect the decisions of those with appointment powers while maintaining party discipline.

To address various social and policy issues, the party has established approximately 30 new internal organizations and task forces. Among these, the ‘Animal and Together Task Force’ (TF) was launched on May 22 at the National Assembly. Led by Deputy Speaker Nam In-soon, the TF aims to promote animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, and the development of the pet industry.

The TF will focus on four main agendas: creating a society where humans and animals coexist happily, promoting life respect and responsible culture, easing the economic burden on pet owners, and fostering the pet industry. The group includes various lawmakers and external experts, such as Professor Choi Jae-cheon, to develop legislative and policy tasks.
