Democratic Party of Korea launches official YouTube news platform

The Democratic Party of Korea has launched ‘Democratic Party TV’, an official YouTube channel intended to serve as a ‘basic platform for all news’ produced by the party. Following a pilot period, the channel has transitioned to regular programming five days a week, with representative Kim Min-seok appearing regularly to convey the party’s political, policy, and national administration promotion stances.

The party aims to operate the channel as a ‘platform channel’ rather than just a content channel, seeking to collaborate with other progressive and centrist media outlets. Kim Min-seok has likened the channel to a ‘textbook’ while describing other media as ‘workbooks’ to illustrate this cooperative vision.

This move raises questions regarding the role of ruling parties in democratic public discourse. While political parties naturally communicate their policies, the establishment of a dedicated media platform by a major political entity lacks the institutional safeguards for editorial independence found in public broadcasting. Furthermore, the reliance on YouTube’s recommendation algorithms creates a paradox: the political power responsible for potentially regulating platform algorithms becomes a primary beneficiary of those same algorithms to expand its political influence.
