Kosovo political crisis deepens as PDK challenges government legitimacy
Kosovo is facing a significant political crisis following the withdrawal of Bekim Sejdiu from the presidential race. Sejdiu stepped down after failing to secure sufficient parliamentary support, a move that has stalled efforts to elect a new head of state.
Simultaneously, the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) has filed a request with the Constitutional Court to challenge the legality of the newly elected government and the constitution of the 11th Assembly. The PDK argues that the Assembly was formed in violation of constitutional timelines and procedures, rendering its decisions, including the election of the government, illegitimate.
The Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) has suspended negotiations with the ruling Vetëvendosje Movement (LVV) regarding a successor to Sejdiu, stating that no further discussions will occur until the Constitutional Court rules on the legitimacy of the current legislature. Meanwhile, the Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI) has highlighted that the constitutional 30-day deadline for the Assembly's constitution was exceeded, raising concerns about the legal stability of the country's institutions.
