Democratic Party official urges merger with Rebuilding Korea Party

Choi Min-hee, a supreme council member of the Democratic Party of Korea, has strongly advocated for a formal merger with the Rebuilding Korea Party to ensure electoral success.

During a radio appearance and subsequent discussions, Choi warned that failing to merge could lead to a significant loss of approximately 40 seats in the Seoul metropolitan area. She noted that these seats are often decided by narrow margins of 1,000 to 2,000 votes or within a 5% range. Choi cautioned that if the Rebuilding Korea Party runs independent candidates, the resulting split in votes could trigger a ‘Pyeongtaek Again’ scenario, where progressive votes are divided.

Choi emphasized that the two parties share similar goals and orientations, making a full merger more practical and effective than a mere electoral alliance. She argued that while alliances can be difficult to manage across numerous districts, a merger would provide a more stable foundation for the democratic reform movement to expand its reach toward moderate voters.
