Democratic Party proposes constitutional reform for National Election Commission

The Democratic Party of Korea has proposed a constitutional amendment to reform the National Election Commission (NEC). Following recent issues regarding ballot shortages, a party task force suggested renaming the body to the ‘National Suffrage Commission’ to better focus on guaranteeing citizens' voting rights.

The proposed reforms include requiring National Assembly consent and presidential appointment for the selection of the NEC chairperson and standing members. Additionally, the plan calls for the establishment of an independent audit committee involving external personnel to ensure transparency and accountability.

To strengthen oversight, the proposal suggests including the NEC and its officials under the jurisdiction of the Board of Audit and Inspection for functional inspections, moving beyond the current system which only allows for general accounting audits. The party's constitutional reform leadership has received these findings and plans to incorporate them into official party discussions.
