Democratic Party reformists challenge M5S influence on policy

Reformist members of Italy’s Democratic Party (PD) are pushing back against the political influence of the Five Star Movement (M5S) and the Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (AVS). During a national assembly in Prato, reformist leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived programmatic subalternity to parties that hold significantly fewer votes.

A primary point of contention is foreign policy, specifically regarding military support for Ukraine. Reformists, including Lorenzo Guerini and Lia Quartapelle, have asserted that supporting Kyiv and providing military aid is a “crucial, indispensable” line that the party will not abandon. They rejected the idea of adopting the policy positions of Giuseppe Conte’s M5S, arguing that the PD must maintain its own majority-oriented identity.

Other figures, such as Giorgio Gori, emphasized that the PD cannot allow itself to be dominated by a party with half its electoral strength. The internal tension highlights a struggle for the party's direction ahead of upcoming leadership discussions, with reformists seeking to distance themselves from the more populist or anti-war stances advocated by coalition partners.
