Democratic Party sees rising support for socialism in recent polls

Recent polling and political commentary highlight a growing trend of socialist sentiment within the Democratic Party. According to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted in early September, 59 percent of Democrats identify as supporters of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), compared to only 2 percent of Republicans and 22 percent of independents.

In Alabama, Democratic representatives have suggested that socialists can fit under the party’s ‘big tent’ philosophy. This shift follows broader trends noted in Gallup polling, which indicated that 66 percent of Democrats viewed socialism positively in 2025, a significant increase from 2010 when views on socialism and capitalism were more evenly split.

The DSA has recently released a platform that includes calls for drafting a new constitution, creating a democratic socialist republic, abolishing the Electoral College, and replacing the President and Supreme Court with entities subordinate to Congress. The platform also advocates for the abolition of the police and prison systems, the abolition of ICE, and granting amnesty to all immigrants.
