Democratic Progressive Party warns of parliamentary constitutional overreach

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is advocating for strict adherence to constitutional boundaries regarding parliamentary oversight in Malawi. Redson Munlo has emphasized that while Parliament holds a fundamental mandate to make laws and monitor government performance, this oversight must not be confused with political interference or the usurpation of other institutional powers.

This stance follows a High Court intervention that temporarily halted proposed parliamentary inquiries pending judicial review. The court's decision addresses concerns raised by DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito, who argued that certain inquiries risked crossing the line from legitimate oversight into unconstitutional investigation. The DPP maintains that while public institutions must remain accountable, Parliament must not act as the executive, the police, or the judiciary.
