Democratic Rally begins internal process for 2028 presidential candidates

The Democratic Rally (DISY) party in Cyprus has entered a period of internal political maneuvering regarding the 2028 presidential elections. Party spokesperson Onofrios Koullas stated that the selection of the presidential candidate will be decided by a vote of the party members under a new statutory process, emphasizing that the decision must be binding for all candidates to ensure party unity.

Internal competition is intensifying following the announcement of Averof Neofytou’s candidacy and the intention of Annita Demetriou to contest the party’s nomination. Tensions have surfaced regarding past political arrangements, including discussions surrounding Demetriou’s reelection as Speaker of the House. While Demetriou has acknowledged Neofytou’s support in her reelection, the dynamics of their political relationship and future alliances remain a central point of debate within the party.
