Democratic Republic of Congo faces entrenched M23 rebel standoff and uneven justice
Political analyst Christian Moleka warned that the opposition’s recent cancellation of planned protests is a concession exchanged only for a vague promise of dialogue, while the government in Kinshasa has not yielded on constitutional reforms or pre‑dialogue conditions. He highlighted that the balance of power on the ground, shaped by the M23 rebel group’s continued territorial entrenchment since 2022, forces Kinshasa to rely on political compromise rather than military superiority.
Human‑rights lawyer Lilas Sansa criticised what she described as a two‑speed justice system for alleged perpetrators of crimes in the DRC. She praised the French court’s conviction of Roger Lumbala for complicity in crimes against humanity, but contrasted it with the treatment of Jean‑Pierre Bemba, who, despite an ICC conviction later overturned, has been appointed twice to the Congolese government. Sansa argued that this disparity reflects a lack of political will to fully address the chain of responsibility for violence that involves both Congolese and regional actors.
