Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola outbreak exceeds 5,000 deaths
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached a critical threshold, with official data recording 5,026 deaths out of 10,351 total infections. Caused by the Bundibugyo variant, this epidemic is the second most deadly in history, surpassed only by the 2014–2016 West African outbreak.
The Bundibugyo strain is characterized by a fatality rate exceeding 50 percent and currently lacks approved vaccines or specific authorized treatments. Health authorities, including the Africa CDC, report that approximately 80 percent of new cases occur outside of monitored contact chains, making rapid identification extremely difficult.
In the eastern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, the response is hampered by armed violence, geographic isolation, and mistrust of medical institutions. Additionally, healthcare workers in areas such as Tchomia have suspended services due to unpaid wages, further weakening the containment efforts.
