Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola outbreak exceeds 5,500 cases
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached critical levels, with the National Institute of Public Health reporting 5,514 confirmed cases and 2,642 deaths. The current epidemic, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, is characterized by a high fatality rate of approximately 47.9%. The Ituri province remains the epicenter, accounting for over 83% of all confirmed cases.
Health response efforts are facing significant challenges due to violence against medical personnel and humanitarian workers. The Red Cross has reported attacks on volunteers and the destruction of medical equipment. These incidents, alongside community displacement and infrastructure deficiencies, have hindered essential activities such as contact tracing, vaccination, and safe burials.
The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. To assist in containment, the WHO has dispatched over 16,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine to the country. While Ervebo was developed for different Ebola strains, it is being utilized in clinical trials to determine its effectiveness against the Bundibugyo virus.
