Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola outbreak reaches record death toll

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached a critical threshold, becoming the deadliest in the country's history. According to government and health data, the death toll has risen to 2,325, surpassing the 2018–2020 outbreak which saw 2,299 fatalities.

Confirmed cases have reached 4,945, with a recorded mortality rate of approximately 47%. The United Nations has issued a warning regarding the scale of the crisis, noting that a person dies approximately every 30 minutes due to the virus. The outbreak has spread to six of the country's 26 provinces, with the highest concentration of cases in the northeastern regions, particularly in Ituri province, which has recorded over 3,400 cases.

Health experts state this is one of the fastest-spreading outbreaks in the history of the Ebola virus. The current crisis is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Challenges in containment include late detection of cases and difficulties in contact tracing.
