Democratic Republic of the Congo faces displacement and fire crises

Multiple humanitarian crises are unfolding in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Kamituga, South Kivu, a fire in the Hexagone neighborhood destroyed more than 20 houses on September 7, 2026. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started in a home where a child was preparing food, though this has not been officially confirmed. Displaced families have lost essential belongings and are sleeping outdoors while awaiting assistance.

Simultaneously, in North Kivu, an intensification of fighting between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo forces in Masisi has triggered a new wave of displacement. Families are fleeing toward the villages of Kyumba and Langira in the Walikale territory. Local authorities report that host communities are struggling to accommodate the influx, leaving many displaced persons without adequate shelter, food, or medical care.
