Democratic Republic of the Congo faces displacement crisis

Over 12,000 people have been displaced across the provinces of Tanganyika, Maniema, and Haut-Uélé in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between August 10 and August 26, 2026. The displacement is driven by a combination of insecurity and natural disasters.

In Haut-Uélé, nearly 9,000 people have fled the Malamba and Betongwe chiefdoms, primarily women and children. Local reports indicate that in the Watsa and Wamba territories, approximately 10,000 people have been living in dire conditions for over three months due to ongoing attacks by ADF rebels. These displaced populations face severe shortages of food, medicine, and basic necessities.

In Maniema, fires in the localities of Bututa and Matchapano affected 1,194 people, causing significant material damage. In Tanganyika, 2,694 people moved toward Kalemie and Nyunzu to escape vulnerability. The Congolese government has prioritized emergency humanitarian assistance and resource mobilization in response to these crises, following the launch of a national solidarity campaign by President Félix Tshisekedi.
