Democratic Republic of the Congo faces Ebola crisis and political tensions

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is grappling with a severe Ebola outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain. According to Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya, there have been over 10,600 confirmed cases and approximately 5,200 deaths. The epidemic has affected eight provinces and 67 health zones. Response efforts are struggling, with 85 percent of new cases lacking contact tracing and two out of three deaths occurring within communities. In Ituri, insecurity and heavy rains are hindering medical teams. The World Health Organization is currently testing two new candidate vaccines, ChAdOx1 and mRNA-1469, through the Tumaini clinical trial.

Simultaneously, political tensions have escalated between the government and the C64 opposition coalition. The C64 plans to travel to Goma to meet with former President Joseph Kabila to discuss an inclusive national dialogue. However, Vice-Prime Minister of the Interior Jacquemain Shabani has warned that such contacts in occupied territories cannot occur without government authorization, citing potential criminal penalties for unauthorized movements.
